Let me tell you a bit about Devil’s Club. Oplopanax is a rare genus closely related to true Ginseng and Eleuthero. Devil’s Club (Oplopanax horridus) occurs in Alaska to Washington but mainly here in British Columbia’s coastal rainforest. The only other species, Oplopanax excelsa, is endemic to south Siberian Amur Russia, prized as a well-studied adaptogen tonic there.
Devil’s Club has active compounds and properties similar to those explored in the Russian species. What I’ve learned from current publications indicates Devil’s Club has an even wider array of highly effective medicinal compounds. Top-calibre journals report new nontoxic sesquiterpenes: strongly antioxidant, antimycobacterial, vs several cancer lines (esp. colorectal and breast) as well as verifying traditional uses with TB, diabetes, influenza, respiratory cough/colds, skin burns and as a general painkiller. The stem wood is said to protect homes and is carried as a charm.
