About Us

“The less information that individuals have when they first begin approaching a plant, the more likely there are to be divergent outcomes, whereas when individuals have access to high-quality information or maybe even some guidance from the community or others that have worked with it, the outcomes tend to be more beneficial.”

–James Joseph, Director of the Edelic Center for Ethnobotanical Services

Herb Research Foundation is a dry and powdered herb wholesaler specializing in the acquisition and sales of rare, hard-to-find botanical products from around the world. With 22 years of experience and longstanding relationships directly with the growers of its botanicals, HRF has a proven commitment to the authenticity and quality of the plants that it sells that will eventually end up in the hands of consumers.

HRF has been studying mitragyna since 1997, and worked closely with Robert Montgomery of Botanical Preservation Corp and Of The Jungle, who was the first to bring mitragyna to the US market in 1995. HRF has been a pioneer in the industry not only in the extent to which it conducts laboratory testing on every lot of botanicals prior to sale, but also to the degree it conducts due diligence with the individuals and companies to whom it sells botanicals, in order to ensure the baseline quality of its botanicals is not altered or compromised on its way to the consumer.

This is crucial in today’s herbal marketplace because with the growing consumer demand for products, ethical stakeholders in the herbal and dietary supplement community have become increasingly concerned about the practice of adulteration or contamination of plant products, which can be accidental or deliberate. Testing and accountability always costs more, but are essential to maintaining both public safety and continued access to herbs and supplements which are of potential concern and are not currently regulated or monitored to the same standards as FDA-approved pharmaceutical medications.

As a result, membership with HRF as a registered customer, retailer or wholesaler is required before we can authorize shipping of any botanical product. In addition, for certain products on our website, HRF requires submission of documentation of professional licensure: either of a practitioner (MD, ND, DC, LAc, Pharm.D, AHG, etc.) or research scientist (MS, PhD) affiliated with an accredited educational institution. This is required since certain botanicals may have more inherent vulnerability to quality decline or improper use than others, which can translate into more potential risks for consumers without the guidance and experience of professionals familiar with the plants.

In fact, HRF is committed to establishing a space and a source for open communication, education, and research among professionals about plants of limited experience but wide interest to consumers as a method of improving access to evidence-based information about these botanicals.
