Nelumbo nucifera, the white lotus has many medicinal parts, not all of them used for the same purpose. People are being sold the leaves and flowers, used to reduce cholesterol, as an entheogen. Nelumbinis Plumula, the emerald heart of the seed, (Om Mani Padme Hum roughly translates as “Om the jewel inside the lotus”) is the part that is active as an entheogen. Poppy alkaloids are found in the seeds but especially in the heart of the seeds. Nelumbo is used to delay ejaculation and to treat insomnia, irritability, anxiety and excessive mental activity. These indications for use confirm that the alkaloids found are active. Research should be done on this plant and particularly this part.
